PC Adobe PageMaker Templates Instructions PageMaker Templates (Version 6 and above) (Note: if you are using PageMaker 5.0 for PC, you should download the Macintosh templates for PageMaker - these can be converted and opened directly in PageMaker 5.0 for PC.) 1. Start PageMaker Application. 2. Select File > Open, Locate and Open the appropriate template. You should choose to show "All Files" from the "Files of Type" list. NOTES ON OPENING TEMPLATES: These templates were originally created in PageMaker for Macintosh, and converted to Windows-compatible versions. You may as a result see one or more of the following messages when you open a template: A) "Cannot load target printer" - you should click on "Continue." Once the template is open, go to File > Document Setup and select your printer in the "Compose to Printer" popup menu. B) "PANOSE Font Matching Results" - click on "Okay." 3. The template will open showing the outlines of the template fields. You may need to zoom to a closer view to see all the outlines clearly - go to the View menu to change zoom settings. (These field outlines are on a master page and therefore are locked; you should only edit them when you calibrate for your printer. Other than when you calibrate, you should not move or change these field outlines in any way.) 4. Calibrate the template for your printer (see below). 5. Add graphic elements to your template as outlined in the following steps. NOTE: when you add a graphic object, for example a picture, to a template, it will obscure the outlines of the template fields. However, if you click the object with the arrow tool and hold the mouse button down, the object will become semi-transparent after a few seconds, allowing you to see the field outlines and fine-tune alignment of the graphic object. 6. To add a colored background to a rectangular field, go to the toolbox and click the rectangle tool. Drag across the document to create a rectangle. Go to Element > Fill and Stroke to apply a colored fill to the rectangle, or to change/remove its stroke. (To add a custom color to the pop-up menus in the Element > Fill and Stroke dialog box, go to Utilities > Define Colors and create a new color.) Fine-tune positioning of the rectangle by following the instructions in 5 above. 7. To add a picture to the field, go to File > Place. Find the picture file, select "OK" and click on the template approximately where you want the left top corner of the picture to go - the picture will be placed on the template in its original size. You can then use the control palette (Window > Show Control Palette) to resize the picture by entering new percentages in the picture scale boxes, or you can drag on the picture's corner handles. Use the crop tool to crop away unwanted portions of the image. Fine-tune positioning of the image by following the instructions in 5 above. 8. To add text, drag with the text tool to create a new text box. Type your text into the text box. Drag across the text with the text tool to select it, then format the text using the control palette, or type Control-T to bring up a Type Specs box which includes type color options. 9. When you are ready to print, go up to the View menu and deselect "Display Master Items." This hides the field outlines so that only the artwork that you have created prints onto the page. Notes on print calibration in PageMaker In PageMaker, you should calibrate the document to your printer before you add pictures and text. First, open the template. Click on the master page icon at the bottom left of your window (the little page with an "R" on it). Print the document onto plain paper. You will get a printout of just the field outlines. Hold this printout up against your Fellowes/NEATO stock to see if it lines up exactly. If not, go to the Edit menu and choose "Select All." Then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to nudge all the field outlines in the direction you think they need to be moved, and repeat the printout. Once you have the fields in exactly the right position for your printer, click on the page icon at bottom left numbered "1". Now you can continue with section 5 above to add your artwork to the template. For more specific help with PageMaker functions, please consult your Adobe PageMaker user manual.
